Our volunteers accompany human rights defenders in conflict areas

PBI has been promoting nonviolence and protecting human rights since 1981.

PBI's volunteers embody international concern for human rights on the ground.

PBI has protected the lives of hundreds of activists: our accompaniment creates space for local activists to work.

1,685 days of physical accompaniment, 2,000 visits and meetings with human rights defenders, 1,000 meetings with international and regional authorities and organisations, protection and support to 170 women and 197 men human rights defenders from 49 organisations. PBI celebrates 30 years protecting human rights

Since 1981, PBI has helped hundreds of communities and thousands of people in 11 countries by protecting human rights defenders who tirelessly work in pursuit of justice for the victims and survivors of violence, displacement and repression

We send international volunteers to areas of conflict, providing protective accompaniment to human rights defenders threatened by political violence. We also facilitate other peace-building initiatives.

We are nonpartisan and do not interfere in the affairs of those we accompany, because we believe that a lasting peace cannot be imposed from outside but must come from the desires of local people.

News from PBI

What they say

"PBI is quite different from most other international NGOs I have come across...PBI safeguards rights on the front line by risking their own most basic rights: right to life, dignity and liberty of person."
